Ferrara Candy told Food & Wine, “We made the hard choice to discontinue Fruit Stripe Gum, but customers may still be able to find the product at particular stores nationwide.” The choice was not taken lightly and required careful consideration of consumer preferences and purchasing patterns.

If you’re a lover of taste that is concentrated into a little period of time, or if you’re a child of the 1960s You have a particular place in your heart for Fruit Stripe Gum. Its colorful rainbow packaging featuring the cheeky zebra named Yipes became an instant classic.

The news hit social media, and fans poured out their feelings. One Reddit user summed it up pretty well, saying, “A piece of my childhood just died.” Another waxed nostalgic, calling it “the wildest three-second ride that your tastebuds ever knew.”

But that’s not the only blow to gum enthusiasts – Super Bubble has also bitten the dust. While you might still snag a pack at certain stores, Ferrara Candy has officially shut down production for both treats. The candy maker quietly pulled the plug in 2022, and chewing gum is no longer on their production menu.

This decision mirrors a broader trend of gum sales taking a nosedive over the past few years, down by a whopping one-third since 2018. The Atlantic Magazine has even gone so far as to declare gum as “just not cool anymore.” It’s the end of an era for both these classics – Super Bubble, born in the post-World War 2 era in 1946 as Bub’s Daddy, and Fruit Stripe Gum, a child of the swinging ’60s.

Fruit Stripe Gum’s allure wasn’t just about the taste – the vibrant packaging, the colorful stripes, and the lovable Yipes the Zebra made it a standout. And let’s not forget the zebra-themed tattoos that came with it, and the unique combo of flavors – Wet n’ Wild Melon, Cherry, Lemon, Orange, and Peach Smash.

As we bid farewell to these timeless gum brands, we’re also saying goodbye to a piece of our childhood. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, but hey, at least we’ll always have those sweet memories – and maybe a hidden stash of Fruit Stripe Gum tucked away in a lucky store.
