In the early hours of a Monday morning, Southern California had a small 4.1 strength earthquake close to Rancho Palos Verdes. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported this information. The seismic activity occurred at 8:27 in the morning in Pacific time, a earthquake happened along the coast. It was around 11 miles from Rancho Palos Verdes which shook nearby areas noticeably.
People in southern part of California felt the shaking, one called Melinda Murphy said there was a bit of rocking and small movement in Playa del Rey. During the earthquake, Carol Ivanusic, living close to Victorville, noticed her travel trailer moving a little. Some people even got messages on their phones right before the earthquake happened, according to Ruiz.
Tha earthquake was about 7 miles deep and happened 12 miles from Palos Verdes Estates, 13 miles from Rolling Hills Estates, 13 miles from Los Angeles but also around 15 miles away from Torrance. Fortunately, there were no early reports of injuries or damage caused by the earthquake.
This event comes after astring of earthquakes in Japan, like the 7.6 strength one earlier today. Well-known scholar from California, Dr. Lucy Jones, talked about earthquakes on social media. He said Rancho Palos Verdes’ 4.1 quake was way too tiny to worry about tsunamis because it wasn’t big enough. He stress that the difference in size is huge and told everyone Japan’s 7.5 earthquake was a hundred thousand times.
The USGS said that in the last 10 days, there was one big earthquake at a level of 3.0 or greater close by. A larger study lasting three years showed that there are around five earthquakes, with magnitudes between 4.0 and 5.0, every year in the big Los Angeles area.In the early hours of a Monday morning, Southern California had a small 4.1 strength earthquake close to Rancho Palos Verdes. Even though at first people said the earthquake was 4.3 on a scale, later it got changed by USGS to be 4.1 instead. The trembling from the earthquake was felt in places as far out as Santa Clarita, Temecula, San Bernardino and Mission Viejo with even Catalina Island being affected. Dr. Lucy Jones told people not to worry about an earthquake near the sea, it wouldn’t make big wave problems. She also said that California’s quake was much different from what is going on in Japan with bigger and stronger moves of Earth underneath surface called seismic activity.
People who watch the situation still need to be on alert. They also tell people living there to stay ready for significant shaking in the area that was built badly and can break easily from an earthquake.
