Given the recent violent fight between several armed rival groups in a shelter on Randall’s Island, there is no doubt that illegal immigrants face numerous obstacles when trying to obtain refuge status within New York City.

There has been more concern for the safety of persons living in a shelter because during this altercation a 24-year old man was stabbed. Such a case, cross to the outside of that building due attention was on security dimension in such facilities.

This altercation is part of a worrying trend, as there was another stabbing that occurred just 11 days ago and it led to death. Problems associated with the dynamic situation within the shelter, together with a growing security issue and an increase in crime rates have resulted in further suspicions both from locals and authorities.

The continued violence has forced the city’s administration under Mayor Eric Adams to review and strengthen security measures at the shelter. Given this, the 18 arrests made in relation to the brawl can be taken as a sign that law enforcers are actively dealing with issues.

It is important to note that most refugees migrants are seeking the American dream and a better life. On the other hand, law enforcers have to respond with great force when their few predecessors wreak havoc on safety in shelters.
