This revelation challenges how we might interpret language perception and opens new roads for research in neuroscience and phonetics.

Led by senior author Evelina Fedorenko and lead author Greta Tuckute, the research harnessed the power of artificial language networks, specifically models like GPT, to unravel the nuances of the brain’s response to diverse sentences. The findings reveal that grammatically unusual sentences, such as “Buy sell signals remains a particular,” activate the brain’s language network more robustly than straightforward sentences like “We were sitting on the couch.”

The researchers employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure the brain activity of five participants as they read 1,000 varied sentences sourced from fiction, spoken word transcriptions, web text, and scientific articles. Simultaneously, an advanced language model akin to ChatGPT processed the same sentences, forming the basis for an encoding model.

This encoding model, a pivotal aspect of the research methodology, successfully predicted human brain responses based on patterns derived from the artificial language network’s activation. The researchers then utilized this predictive capability to identify 500 new sentences that either maximally activated or minimally engaged the human language network. Subsequent tests with three additional participants confirmed the accuracy of the model’s predictions.

One key insight from the study is the role of linguistic complexity and surprise in triggering brain responses. Sentences with higher surprisal, indicating uncommonness compared to other sentences, generated more pronounced responses in the language network. Furthermore, linguistic complexity, measured by adherence to English grammar and plausibility, emerged as a significant factor. Extremely simple or overly complex sentences evoked minimal activation, while sentences striking a balance of complexity and plausibility triggered the highest brain responses.

Fedorenko, Associate Professor of Neuroscience at MIT, emphasizes the importance of sentences being “language-like enough to engage the system.” When sentences become too easy to process, the brain exhibits minimal response; however, introducing difficulty, surprise, or unusual construction prompts heightened neural activity.

Funded by institutions including the National Institutes of Health and an Amazon Fellowship, the research aims to expand its findings to speakers of languages other than English. Additionally, the team plans to explore stimuli that activate language processing regions in the brain’s right hemisphere, paving the way for a deeper understanding of the brain’s intricate linguistic processing capabilities.

This pivotal examination not only gives bits of knowledge into the interchange among language and the human brain yet.
