On the 15th of January in 2024, Monday precisely by St. Mary’s County Government (SMCG), there is observed  Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which means that all administrative offices are closed during this day because of it as well This closing is a symbolic gesture in remembrance and respect to the memory of this powerful civil rights icon.

In this short interruption, some facilities and services of SMCG will suffer from the closure. The St. Mary’s County Libraries, in Charlotte Hall, Leonardtown and Lexington Park will be closed for the day so their employees and visitors can contemplate Legacy of Dr. King on civil right movement

Likewise, the Animal Adoption & Resources Center will also stay closed on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day so that employees can engage in activities celebrating Dr. Kings teachings

Moreover, the Senior Activity Centers including Garvey , Loffler & Northern will celebrate this day as NO HDM service. The suspension of routine operations can be seen as an initiative aimed at prompting employees and members of the community to attend occasions or speak about Martin Luther King, Jr.’s efforts towards ensuring racial equality.

The St. Mary’s Transit System (STS) will not operate on January 15 but recommence services the next day. This transit pause allows the commemoration of Dr. King’s achievements and reflection upon justice and equality as a journey that continues today

Although the closures have been implemented, a number of SMCG operations will remain open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
